How to keep pumpkins from rotting on your porch
An uncarved pumpkin lasts two to three months outdoors in Utah's dry autumn climate, comfortably longer than the season. A carved pumpkin lasts about five to ten days. The two things that shorten either one are standing moisture underneath and direct contact with cold concrete.

Utah's fall is close to ideal for this. The air is dry, the nights are cold without being freezing for most of the season, and there is very little of the humidity that rots pumpkins in other parts of the country. A whole, uncarved pumpkin put out in late September will normally still look good at Thanksgiving.
01What actually shortens the life of a pumpkin
Standing water underneath. This is the main one. A pumpkin sitting in a puddle on a step rots from the bottom up, and you will not see it until it collapses. Anything that keeps air moving under the base buys weeks.
Direct contact with cold concrete or stone. The temperature differential encourages soft spots on the underside.
Carving. It removes the skin, which is the only thing protecting the flesh. Five to ten days is realistic.
A hard freeze. Below about 32F for a sustained period, the flesh turns to mush on thaw. Utah usually delivers a few of these in November, and that is what ends the season rather than decay.
Handling by the stem. The stem is not a handle. Breaking it opens the pumpkin to rot at the top.
02How to get the full season
Keep the bases dry and off the concrete, sweep leaves and standing water off the display after a storm, and leave the pumpkins uncarved. That is essentially all of it. The bleach-solution wipe-down that circulates every autumn does very little for a whole pumpkin, because an intact skin is already doing the job.
03Why heirloom varieties last longer
Field pumpkins bred for carving are bred to be thin-walled and easy to cut. Heirloom and specialty varieties are generally denser and harder-skinned, which is why they hold up on a porch for months. It is the same reason they cost more, and a large part of why a designed display outlives a run to the pumpkin lot.
